Nowadays, it is possible to reach every corners of Vietnam by road. Most of the roads connecting the towns are paved and in good conditions. However, if you are going to travel to a remote mountainous area, the road condition should be well checked in advance as it may not be passable due to floods or landsides.
Local buses are widely used by the local people. In big cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, there are brand new buses running to most of surrounding provinces in every 15 minutes. The older and lower quality buses run one or twice a day between the provincial capitals and their communes. Either kind of the buses, normally overloaded despite their seats are designed much more smaller to save room, are definitely not recommended to travelers.
There are high quality daily scheduled bus services from South to North Vietnam and vice-versa. The buses takes 3 days between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with stopovers in the tourist attractions such as Phan Thiet – Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue and Ninh Binh.
